Wow!! . . . and I always thought Jim Waynne was solely responsible for the invention of the stern drive. Little did anyone know including Carl Kiekhaefer that his own high ranking employee, Charlie Strang was the master mind behind the stern drive. Now that is the rest of the story.

Oh yeah, didn't know that huh?
A huge scam.
I believe they had to wait until someone died before letting that story out.

I just tripped over this site again and did a search in Donzi.net to see if it was posted in the past, I guess BB did. It’s good reading for any of you that have a spare couple of minutes.

Stern drives were around even before Strang and Wynne "Improved" the design. They didn't invent the whole concept, just the incorporation of the double universal joint that let the drive rotate vertically and horizontally. The eariler drives were essentially fixed and only the lower unit was turnable via an external steering linkage.

I thought Leslie Gore invented it???
No wait, she sang about it. "Its my outdrive and I'll cry if I want to"

It is interesting to note that the Johnson came out with the "Johnson Tilting Stern Drive" in 1930. There is a picture of the unit in the Iron Fist book. An incredible story of how the stern drive evolved of the years, and more incredible is the secret that Charlie Strang and Jim Wynne kept between them. Is Jim Wynne still around?

Looks as thought Jim Wynne passed away in Miami on December 21, 1990 due to repiratory failure. I found it in teh Kiekhaefer book "Iron Fist"
