At 10pm on 3/5/03 the A&E network will air "Smugglers and Speedboats",the Don Aronow story, on A&E's "City Confidential". Set your VCR's. I Don't know anything about this show, however some classic race footage is supposed to be shown.
I also hope I don't offend any of the Aronow's knowing that they are members on this board. I post this information out of respect and admiration for a man who founded a sport we all love.

Sounds good to me, I'll even forego South Park to catch this one. Thanks for the heads up.

It'll be interesting to see what approach they take, but my understanding is that Don worked with Drug Enforcement at one time to build boats that could be used for intercepting drug dealers.

I called A&E and they said "Smugglers and Speedboats" was not available for purchase. I also asked if it was to air again, and I was told not this month. They only know a month in advance on what is going to air.

So who will make me a copy?

Thanks
Mike

That was good. Only thing I didnt like is our cable company scrambled it :( Tried recording on 3 different VCR's and realize thats what the problem was. Now I get to rewire everything back to how it was before...

Not much fact checking going on in that show.
They said Don started Formula first then Magnum then Donzi?????

As far as I know the line up was, Formula, Donzi, Magnum, Cigarette/Cigarette Racing Team, Squadron XII, And USA Racing Team.

I have a copy of tape will check and see the quality of picture, I can make copies The show was good but had the time line a little off and was more about Don's tragic end then his accomplishments . And it was great to put a face with Alan Brown he looks like a guy you would like to have a beer with and shoot the brezze.

It was really good, except Donzi came before Magnum, and Don launched Magnum as Magnum Donzi under an agreement with Donzi's new owners. I also do not agree that Don screwed the people he sold company's to. They all purchased the brands that Don made famous, great brand recognition and great boat designs. If the statement about the raw materials is true was it really all that important? The strength of Forumla, Donzi, Magnum, and Cigarette where there association with the Aronow name. It's no acident that these names are still legends in power boating.

Not much new info, but it was interesting to see the evolution of Off-Shore racing to a spectator sport. It was nice to put a face to Brownie. Odd that there was no mention of Wynne or Bertram. But I guess that didn't really fit the "Speed Kills" slant of the piece.
