Just wondering? Given the built in-hook that the early 16's have. How fast has anyone gone with SBF 289/302, 351 including stoked,SBC any size? We all know that certain 18's have seen over 100 verified. Braggers will be checked with a ruler...er Radar gun at AOTHIII.

As has been discussed many times before the "Hook" is in all 16 and 18 not just the early ones and at speed the "hook"has no effect on the boats speed what so ever. In hy past we removed the hook on a 1967 16 and didnot gain anything except slower on plane time and an excessive amount of porposing at a cruise. Our 1966 16(which we still have) runs between 56->58 mph on ameasured Mile with a new broken in 302 app.225 HP. BTW we all regret removing the hook. So we put it back. Putting it back was a lot easier than taking it off.

I can't answer that question conclusivly, but this one was witnessed sailing past a 28ZX at around 80.

I have a 66 16' with a SBC 406 and an Alpha drive. The engine is built up somewhat but not wild. The best I got from it was 74 MPH, more consistantly though was 72.

97 16 w/ 350 (approx 330 pshp) and a Gen II, 14 1/2 x 23 mercury cleaver @ 5300 rpm against the rev limiter... 68.0 gps is the best i've seen, consistantly in the 65 range... so far anyway...

if you want speed from a 16 you have to get the hull settled down so you can trim it out cause anything above 60 can get exciting if it isn't all in tune... tabs, weight distribution, high X, small diameter props and seat time... working on some other ideas this summer...

there are some 70+ 16's floating around here...

Thanks all for the responses: (1) Big Grizly 56-58mph is moving with a 302.Hook is a little mis-leading considering how far up the deadrise it occurs on my 16! Porpoising a speed shouldn't be a factor with or without.Would love to hear about your 66's setup. 250 outdrive, prop, drive ratios etc.(2)Ranman,Wow! Wasn't around for that tread,But 80mph plus....amazing, what a cool boat that guy has.(3)Jamie, Rev-limiter..." we don't need no stinking Rev-limiter" just kidding. You have mail. and (4) Tommy, Mostly on lake Erie but I may be doing some set up/testing on Alum, put your thumb out in April.NEW TO THIS SITE NOT PERFORMACE BOATING.

Jamie has it right high speeds are very capable once you get the hull "seated" at 55 or so my 16 falls off big time side to side, right prop right x dimension and right trim and you can move right along with the big dogs
tabs a must

While they are the ultimate modest guys, (and I hope to one day meet them!), my money would be on Emmo and Forrest. But Jamie Root is working day and night on his very sweet 16, and may be challenging for this honor soon! My '67 16 has the horsies, but my old Volvo AQ200 (streamlined like a UPS truck) limits us to 58-60 mph.
