I own a donzi 28 so I can share with you what I know about that boat, and I can tell you what I have heard about the Bertram 31. The Donzi28 is a very heavy deep-v boat that has excellent seakeeping abilities and gives you an above average dry ride in rough seas. I have 340hp big blocks in the boat, she cruises at about 30 to 32 mph and top speed is around 43 mph. I fish with mine in the Chesapeake Bay and I have never been in a situation where I or anyone that has been with me has felt unsafe in rough and windy conditions. Donzi 28's were only made between 1965 and 1968 so they are harder to find than a Bertram 31. This is what I have read and heard about the Bertram. They have excellent seekeeping abilities but in head seas they are known to have a very wet ride. With the same gas 340hp power they cruse at about 24 knots and top speed is about 32 knot. They are also very expensive $50,000 to $200,000 depending on power and condition. They are both extremely well built boats. I guess if you are looking for a serious fishing boat the Bertram is the way to go. If you are looking for a boat that you can cruise in and also use for fishing then the only way to go is the Donzi. I have some lititure and boating articles on the Donzi 28, if you would like I can fax them over to you. Hope this helps

Patp, is you 28 light blue topsides with white deck? Do you know if it had originally twin 427s?
Can you scan that literature you have on the 28's and e-mail it to me for the Models List.

i own a 31 bertram which i have run for 14 years and it is the second one i own. it has 454's with 370 hp at shaft--the boat is very light--about 10500lbs--most 31's are loaded for fishing and tip scales 12500-16000 lbs. my boat will cruise at 30 and top out about 41-42. it is a wet boat in a head sea as the bow has no flair and engines are place well forward.

i have never been on a 28 although i am a big fan and would love to get copies of any literature you have to add to my collection. over the years i have spoken to a few owners of some very tired examples that did not match your performance #'s. also, 28 literature indicate that the the boat is about 8000 lbs but i suspect they are heavier.i would assume they run better in some situations(compared to 31) due the placement of the engines at the stern. in fact when 31's were ocean raced they usually moved engines to same location and ran v-drives as well. unfortunately by having the engines in this location the fishing cockpit suffers as there is very little freeboard in back and most have that ugly stern rail.

if i ever do a 28 project i would relocate engines-run straight inboards and drop cockpit floor and lose the rail. this was actually done when performer made 28 copies in early 70's.

Formula Jr,
No my boat is not blue and white it is Burgundy, silver and White. Pictures should be posted on the registry soon. In the future I am going to paint it back to the original look. My boat originally had the optional 426 Chrysler's 290hp. I have been told that 427's were also an option but I have seen no literature to support that. I e-mailed the information I have to you.

Falcon,

Your Bertram has a great cruise and top end speed. The Donzi 28 does weight more than what Donzi claimed. The marina that pulls the boat ever year said that their guess would be about 10,000lbs or better. What type of props are you using on the Bertram? I have also e-mail you the lit on the donzi 28

Just to clarify---those #'s i gave you were mph not knts----i turn 18 x 19 nibrals ---1:5 to 1 trannies--wot 4500 rpm--shaft size 1 3/8. the key is keep the weight down---most 31's are going to desiel which you need with the equipment laden boats. i am thinking about experimenting with cup as i think i have too much slip. what do you think? thanks for the info.

I think cupped props would help you. I have cupped 14 x 15 Nibral props, with 1:10 to 1 v-drives. I am thinking of sending them out this winter to have them reconditioned and have extra cup put into them because I am getting a lot of slip at 3000 rpm. At 3000 rpm I am only going 28 mph at 3100 the blades start to catch and I am going 30 mph and at 3200 rpm I am going 32 - 33 mph. I would like to be doing 30 mph at 3000 rpm.
I resent the fax let me know if you have any problem
