I know nothing about older engine and outdrive combos. Got a chance to pick up a 1986 z 25 w/454 and 370 outdrive for chump change. Has 800 hours no service records but appears to be cared for, is this an ok combo? I know there were problems with the omc back then. Any help would be appreciated.

370 drive? Sure its not a King Cobra, should be.

The 370 on the drive would be a 454/370 hp TRS package with the Borg Warner transmission. This was a very tough package. The 370 was a 4 bolt main block with steel crank, forged pistons and rods with the 7/16 bolts and rectangular port heads and a high rise intake manifold.Pretty much an LS6 to you car guys.

Pretty cool boat and I don`t believe many were made with that package. What do you consider chump change?

I`m in Maine and would be willing to look it over for you.

What throws me is the OMC comment, is it an OMC engine and Merc drive combo? Not that it makes any difference, if so there may be less hours than stated. It would be a re-power.

Skiing_ztreme,

First and foremost I would like to welcome you to the DOnzi registry. This is a fantastic place to find out information about donzis, and you will find some really great people here. I hope you decided to buy the boat.

I agree with the OMC puzzle- OMC was not in the picture at this time and I beleive the 454 probably came from DOnzi with a TRS drive. This is the same combo on a z-25 my brother and I were working on last weekend.

Great boat, highly recommend, IMHO they were built really well during the period you are talking about.

I had an 86 330 TRS Z-25.The 330 was on the back of the drive. That boat is a 370 TRS. Great package. Not too many came with that package. The 370 is the MAG motor where the 33O is a 7.4. If you get that boat for less than 8 grand that is a real nice boat for the money. Mine did 61 on the speedo so I figured 55-58 gps that boat should see 63-65 on the speedo for 60 on gps or there abouts. Good luck

I have the exact same boat. We've owned it since 1987. Since put Gale Banks turbos on it. The Merc 370 with TRS drive is a great durable combo. We have had not problems with it. :) :)

How did your Gale Banks kit work for you?

I had a Banks twin turbo 482" big block in a 24' Superboat with a TRS/MercTrans set up. It spun a 29p Mirage Plus 6300rpm eek!

no K planes
no hydraulic steering
no drive/tab indicators
7 foot beam

....it went like a 6 wheel dump truck with a loose front end at 100 :D

It is still running great. We run it at Lake Tahoe(6200'). Little slow coming out of the hole but once up goes 66+ with a cleaver. Just got a hydromotive quad IV 23" to see how it does. Dropping it in on Memorial day weekend. I'll let you know how it does. With the cleaver it runs straight and true. We have standard bennett tabs on it. If you get the trim out too high it will chine walk a little. Easily controlled with trim though
