Question to my fellow Donziers. Would a Hydro III be a good choice for a 22 classic, 454 Mag (385 hp), Bravo 1 drive, 1.50:1 gear. Spinning a 25p Mirage (not plus) @ 4700 rpm, gps 69 mph, 72 on speedo. Would really like to pick up 2-3 mph if possible. Max rpm on my motor 5,000 rpm. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Jon

Hey G,
saw this thread a little while ago about the hydromotive. Other board members have had pretty good luck with it. The thread also talks about a guy named Tom at Hydromotive who was really helpful in matching the right prop the boat. Good luck,

The four-blade Hydromotive would probably be an all-around better prop than the three blade version. The three blade may be a tad faster than the four, but the characteristics of the Hydromotive Q-IV makes the boat much easier to handle and much more enjoyable to drive. My suggestion is to hold out for a four-blade in the 22" to 23" range. Also remember, the Hydromotive Q-4 and three-blade props are bacilly cleaver props which means it does not lift the bow like a Mirage or a Turbo prop does. Some of the Atlanta boys have told me that they have had good results on their 22 classic using Merc's four-blade Revolution 4 prop. Maybe someone can say a few words about how that prop works on the 22 classic.

Hey guys this is the prop im looking at. See if this would be good for my boat as opposed to a labbed Mirage?
thanks

G,

In my opinion a cleaver style prop, (ie the one linked above) is not the best prop for your boat. This is assuming you run a stock 18 Classic. Although the Mirage+ may not be the best prop out there, it is a pretty good performer on the 18 Classics and the most widely used. The Mirage+ is a drivers prop though. An 18 Claassic with a Mirage+ is loose and can be a handful in rough water. The Turbo prop from Precision Propellers may be a better choice as some have reported better handling and equal or better speed than the Mirage+.

The Hydromotive Quad IV has also been reported to be a great prop on the 18 Classics. Although the Quad IV may cost you a couple of MPH up top, it supposedly a much more comfortable ride in rough water and also provides all around better handling.

For the record, I've been running a Mirage+ for three years. I'm now in the market for a Hydromotive Quad IV.

FWIW:

25 Mirage lab: 75 mph @ 5000 rpm. Scary, horrible in rough water, good bow lift.

24 Hydro 4 blade fat blades never labbed: 71-72 mph. Fall asleep at the wheel. So stable, amazing rough water handling, could use more bow lift. It is an entirely different boat.

I wonder how something like this Turbo 2+2 would work:

Guys,

What would you recommend as the best Hydromotive prop to run on a '02 28ZXO (double step) with a single stock 496 HO MAG? I'm getting about 60 mph out of the boat right now and would like about 5 mph more. Is it possible with one of the Hydromotive props? Which one???

PS - I'm using a the stock Mercruiser prop now.
