I am about to purchase a complete Volvo 290 sterndrive including transom plate and hydraulics. I am going to replace the 280 in my GT with the 290.
How close to being the same are the transom cut outs for the two drives ?
Any pitfalls to this swap that I should be aware of?
Thanks Danny

I could be wrong but the two are almost identical maybe 1 or 2 bolts more on the 290 should not have to cut just drill

I did this swap to my Corsican. You have to cut 1/2->3/4 inch in 4 spots and drill at least 4 holes. I made a template of the centerline of the original drive and mated it to the 290. Than overlaid it on the transom and mated it with the centerline of the engine. Than looked twice and than drilled make sure its parallel with the bottom (waterline). I did mine with the engine still in the boat and didn't remove anything. I than sealed and epoxied the exposed new wood in the transom. It took me a weekend for the whole project. Would I do it a gain, YES it was easy and worthwhile. One added advantage it handled better in an assortment of different water conditions.
