Ok Gearheads,
Attached is the birth certificate of the cam thats in my 454,Is this cam going to work well with 10:1 compression,by the way Im going to change pistons to get my compression down from 12:1 seems to be the best way and the cheapest,I started to get the motor ready to pull over the weekend. Also this cam was made in Florida,is this a good thing?I thought all they did down there was have fun in the sun......

This looks like a lot of cam. First big Q is do you want to mess with a mechanical.

Made in Florida! Damn right that's a good thing! You can bet that who ever ground that cam didn't have a beer until after 5:00pm.

I don't know if that grind will work for your engine are not, but if you are going to use that cam, it looks like you will need 500+ cubic inches and a very dry exhaust. The duration at 0.050" is 248 degrees on the intake and 258 on the exhaust. eek.gif

I called Crane tech support today and they gave me some good info on a marine grind hydraulic cam that they have and also what type of piston to use. Thanks Forrest and turbo 2256 again for steering me in the right direction. This is really starting to turn into a neat project with matching everything up to perform cool.gif

That cam brings back old memories. Not a bad cam for a street rod but stinks in traffic. No automattics in that car. I wouldn't use it in my boat unless it was a jet with dry exhausts.

I agree with Forrest and Griz!
What kind of exhaust are you using?

RickR,
The engine has Nicson alum. exhaust manifolds 4" dia. they eject the water from the block behind the riser, they seem to work just fine with the old set-up and should be ok with the new cam and pistons.New header type would be nice, maybe next year.

That cam is NOT going to work without a DRY Exhaust

RICKR,
I guess I dont know what you mean by not working, the boat ran fine with the cam card attached and the new cam isnt as nasty. If you could explain to me what you mean by dry exhaust maybe I can understand what you are talking about, this is all new to me so any advice is good advice.

Toes ehausts are like the old H&M exhaust. they are a log type. They are wet the water comes in at the riser. Dry ate when the water and exhaust don't meet until both exit atthe end of the tips.
