Great Shots RAE.

All - That is how fast we travelled all the way out to Redfish in the fog. Really go-slo weather, but it cleared up and we got some speed runs in at last.

Absolute Great time, looking forward to the next run.

Nice rig Jefe! :cool: I'll bet she'll fly out in the gulf.
How far out have you ventured with her?

I always envy you guys flyin' past us when we're heading out of Freeport. (I'll be on a 35' Henriques - not fast, but it more than makes up for it when the seas kick up.

P.S - Like the flag too.

Howdy Mark - Thanks for the complement. Sometimes you have to trade comfort for speed. I'm still young enough to "feel the need for speed", and I don't mind a little salt spray in my face.

Actually, I've been 67 miles out from the channel marker at Bayou La Fourche in LA. Hunting Amberjacks. That makes for a long day, but worth it.

Thanks Again;

Okay, I thought I'd have it figured out by now, but what is Redfish? (It's nice to know exactly what it is that I'm green with envy over you visiting!)

OK, kiddo's! Gather 'round the campfire and I'll tell the tale of Redfish Island.

Once upon a time, (the mid 1850's), Galveston Bay was bisected by a huge reef called Redfish Bar. Legend has it that it was so big that at low tide, cattle were driven across it to Bolivar and on to Beaumont. The economic rivalry between the ports of Galveston and Houston led to some heroic efforts in cutting channels through Redfish Bar, to allow shipping past the port of Galveston, with it's notoriously high tarriffs. These channels were enlarged both by the continued efforts of man, and by Mother Nature, until the only thing left was an island in the middle of the bay called Redfish Island. In the 1930's, it was so big that restaurants, a casino and numerous houses of ill-repute sprang up. The boat-taxi's ran day and night.

Eventually time and tide wore Redfish down, until it was a narrow c-shaped strip with no structures on it. It became a popular gathering spot for boaters from all over the bay. Huge raft-ups of hundreds of boats were common.

Then, it was gone. Several storms, over several years completely submerged Redfish Island. It left quite a void in the minds of many Galveston Bay folks.

A couple of years ago, rumors sprang up about a Corps of Engineers effort to bring Redfish back. Dredging operations in the area had no place to dump the spoil, and the idea was hatched. Over a bed of dredge spoil was laid tons of limestone and shell hash. They created another c-shaped structure, with an achorage of approximately 40 acres. It's protected from the prevailing south winds, and being only six miles out ot the Clear Lake channel, makes a great secluded spot to anchor out for the weekend. It was completed in October, so has not had a full summer yet.

So there's the story of Redfish Island... will someone hand me another beer... :)
