For those of you looking for a classic and agonizing between old and new models, I have one difference for you.

The older 18 Classics have a 25 gallon tank.

My 1995 18 Classic has about a 42 gallon tank.

Anyone know when the fuel tank size change took place?

Being able to carry all that fuel is really handy when boating all weekend or making a long run.

Is there a similar difference in the 22 Classic's?

Scot,

The Silver Streak is an '88 18' and has the 40+ gallon tank. Does that mean both you and I are "changed" men?

Coincidentally, I had to change a balky sending unit on the '78 18 I just got. The placard on the original tank states that it has a 42gal capacity.

Scott,
We went out around 11:00 and made a quick run to Miami Beach and came back at around 1:30. Just in time before a hellacious t-storm barreled thru. eek!

My 73 X18 is 25 gallons
Could really use a 42 tank!
I have to chart fuel stops always,
get it even if you don't need to, yet

When I re-tanked 2 years ago I didn't want to cut stringers, bulkhead etc. . .
Donzi factory specs?

Hey Islander - Manny
Isn't Miami the Capital of South America?

Marlin,

Yep...Miami is the capital of South America. Just like New York is the capital of Planet Earth. :D

Who needs 42 gallons when you have an X.

I know it's been a long winter but I think I have a 20 gallon tank in my 76 X -18. I have filled it up after empty more than once. Any one else with a 20 gal tank.

My "85" has a twenty gal, another Jackie Johnson fan. You mean she predicts the weather also?

I recall seeing an old sales receipt with the 41/42 gal tank being an option. I replaced my stock 25 gal tank with a factory replacement tank from Donzi in 1995 it was a 41 gal tank. This winter I removed the tank and replaced it with a 60 gal Bladder. My little small block is thirsty, 400-420 lbs fuel per hour @ WOT. (1975 X-18)

My '73 X-18 has two 20 gallon tanks. It's sooo nice to not have to stop to fill up all the time. wink

On the differences between old and new classics:
when was flotation put into the hulls? (I assume it is now to meet legal requirements??) I have a '69 18 and had a '82 22 and neither have/had any flotation.
On the fuel capacity survey, my '69 of course has the 25 gal tank but has a fuel gauge sending unit calibration that means shortly below the quarter tank indication you will be pushing a rope to the fuel dock --- been meaning to fix that for many years but we have learned that 1/4 means empty!
Not sure if that is a common characteristic or unique to my boat??
