I bought the Quick silver high performance lower unit oil to add to my reservoir. It says on the bottle that it shouldn't be mixed with regular Quick silver lower unit lube. Is this true?
Will it kill my lower unit?

Good question!
But how about just buying another quart and not worrying about it?
Oil change for Alpha is what 32 oz?
Go for it, it's worth the extra money.

new to this....do I just loosen the drain screw on the bottom of the lower unit? Where do I fill the unit itself?

Mike,

Does this mean you are keeping the 18?

Sagbay32,
Be carefull!!! if you dont do it right
and you leave an air pocket....you will
smoke the drive!!!!

You first remove the bottom drain/fill screw,
then remove the same type screw on the side of the drive about 3/4 the way
up the side...this is the "vent screw".

you must obtain a fill kit with a pump
top that screws into the drain/fill screw hole.......pump the oil in till it starts
to come out of the "vent hole"

Then replace the top "vent" screw first...
then unscrew the fill hose from the pump kit
and quickly replace the "drian/fill screw
Make sure that the little gaskets that
seel both screw's are in place before you
screw them back in or water will get in your drive. Good luck.

Starboard Side? When did Merc put the Vent Scew on the Starboard Side? You don't NEED the fill kit but it makes things much easier/cleaner. Its a bear to shove the tube in the hole and keep pressure on till you have pushed up the next tube. Donzitester is right. Fill from the bottom up, till it weeps out the top vent hole.

I am keeping the 18 umtil I sell it ;)
I am still looking for a bigger boat though.
If I don't sell her this season, I want to make sure when I have it winterized it is done right.

She is still up for sale. Bad time of year :(

The drain screw is on the bulet, port side. The vent screw is port too, it is marked "oil vent".
