Ok...here are some pictures of the new building that will be going up in the next several months. This will be right next to my house and will look like part of the home itself.

Its 40X50 with 13 foot ceilings on the first floor. The upstairs I have not really decided what to do with it yet. All together its 4,000 square feet.

Its been a long haul trying to get all the stuff done to get this thing up. DEP, Town BS etc.

The permits are ready...just got word today.

Should be starting in a few weeks....Cant Wait!!! http://www.donzi.net/photos/spearbuilding01.jpg

I suggest you move close to me and then put up your building. I will then store and work on my boat in it.

Dan,
The back door is 12 feet wide. Really dont want to wide of door. I want it to look even with whats on the house. 3, 10 foot doors in the front will be fine. Hay....once inside there will be plenty of room to move around.

Scott,
Yup....lets not forget the 28.

Cliffs boat will be here soon....Hope he is saving his pennies.

Scott.

If not already, do whatever is required to have it free span inside and NO posts. The boat shop of mine has them (posts) and the wood shop does not. NOT is the way to go. Throw in an I-beam and put a "car" on it. It will be the handiest tool EVER in the shop. Again the wood shop has one of those but the boat shop doesn't. I spend a lot of time trying to move 18 decks and hulls around and "juggle" them around the posts. Drives me crazy.

Lighting. I have 400 square less than you (1600, one floor mind you, a 14' ceiling, a 3' high by 10" wide, 40' long laminated beam (with "car") underneath on track and 25 double fixture (50-8' tubes) of end to end flourecents. I could use MORE... I have a separate, 64 position 200 amp service for it and it is about 8 spaces from full.
I have a 20 KW electric furnace which I am in love with up off the floor about 7', walk under it, then at the ceiling is the ducting. I have 12' wide by 12' high steel insulated garage doors.

I also placed the bottoms of all outside windows at 6' up off the slab. People outside can't see in at what I am doing and they cant see the machines and tools. Still allows for LOTS of light. Hot and cold water in three inside locations and two out. Air compressor (three phase) in a corner and plumbed in the walls with about 6 "drops" regulators, water separators, oilers etc, in various locations. I have two outside air hook-ups as well. Telephone, Satelite, and high end sound wiring (home theater 7 channel, oxy free copper etc etc etc.) Anything and everything that could be put into the walls was. I installed a 4' "Greenheck" through-wall fan that can exhaust the shop about 3 times a minute. The wind coming in from the doorway (open when venting) is like a wind-tunnel.

I also installed rigid PVC (grey) pipe in under the slab and brought out pipe in about 4 locations against the inside slab wall and took them back to the fuse panel area and three phase Generator so "wild" future stuff can be added without hassle. I made the slab dead level (still with drains tho) as it is easier for referencing stuff without little valleys all over.

Toilet plumbing as well but not installed.

Go overboard 'cuz once she's boarded and you are working in there the "shortcuts" you made will not even matter to you. My only hindsight wish,... at this point,... on this shop,..is "bigger". (I got 40' x 40' on this one.)

Did you ever get a measurment of the Rolls #1935 from tip of tongue to end of rear cross-member/frame ends? (down the middle)

Lenny,
I will measure the rolls this week for you.

There will be no upright supports in the garage. Everything will free span. I'm using 2 steel I-Beams running 40 feet. This way I can put running hoists on them. The whole building will have radiant heat in the floors and central AC. Im not using floresents. Most likely low sodiom(spelling)or mercury vapor. I have all the goodies as far as compresors, welders, bake ovens, stainless steel work benches, 1 (2) post lift and 2 (4) post lifts, etc...the list goes on. This is why I needed a bigger garage....to much stuff.

Talk about garage envy! Looks like a plan tha twould work for me. That storage space on the second floor would be my new home! I am glad that you are having the infloor radiant heat. IT is amazing and cost effective as well. You can walk in your bare feet in the dead of winter and the first step up off and ablove the floor and you can feel your feet get cold. You will love it. Is this just your hobby shop, or a busines too? Either way, of all of the building projects that I have done, it only costs a few pennies to do the infrastructure right the first time. It may seem like alot of $$$$ at the time of construction, but a year later I seem to have always regretted not doing something to make future jobs easier. I think that we are all a little "orange" with envy!
Good luck, I am just done with a round of playing the city hall games and easement shows. Gets to be a chore doing the suck up!

But how long is it going to take you to stain that?

Chris

Have you ever thought of dividing one of the bays for dirty work and sanding?

Scott, If you need any help on your hydronic radiant floor let me know. I put a system in my 50x60 shop and it was the best money ever spent.
Cost about .75@ sg.ft. including natural gas boiler.
