Ranman paint the bilge, I screwed up, I scrubbed mine sparkly clean and it did not stay that way. A few of my Buds have theirs painted and they are real easy to clean. I think Donzi gel coated them and it seems to stain pretty easy.

I second paint in the bilge. Much easier to keep clean.

:D What's the best type of paint to use, if you were to roll or brush it on in the bilge? The motor is not coming out yet...'til it grows some horses! wink ...Doc

Well you can't tease me like that and not tell me how to do it. What would you use? Why/how does it clean up better? Do I have to remove everything? or can you tape stuff off? Gimme some direction, please!

Randy,

I like two methods:

For area's you can't/don't want to spray the roll and tip method works really well. If you want a 1 part paint I like the interlux bilgecoat paints. Real good stuff. I hardly ever use a one part but I really like this paint. Another good option if you don't want to spray is to roll and tip Awlgrip. That leaves a real nice finish that is tough as nails.

IMHO the best possible is DELTA. It is a commercail PPG paint used on busses and trains and stuff. It is spray only application and TOUGH to spray. ( also deadly) However once applied nothing short of a bomb will get this stuff off. Grease just wipes off. Lacquer thinner won't take it off in a week once cured...ask my spray gun.

I would remove all the hose/wire guides and tie up all hoses/wires. Clean the bildge as best you can with a good degreaser, use a paint brush for the tight spots. After that go back over it with denatured alcohol. I used Interlux Brightside Polyurethane, one quart yielded two coats. I did mine one half at a time. It flows out very nice but it is a bit smelly so watch out for the vapors. Mine has washed up very well after several spills and has proven to have good stain resistance. Call me if you have any questions.

I bet you are glad I brought this up! Seriously the paint is not a porous as the gel coat you will be happy that you did it.

Guys,

I will be at this point in a week empty engine compartment and looking for a new 350 to put in the 16'.....my bilge has been been painted more..like brushed on and I'd like to get the area painted/sprayed white...do you suggest that I strip the old paint or just scrub it spotless than rub down with mineral spirts and repaint with Awlgrip.

Thanks for the help....

Kirk I would be very hesitant to use any chemical strippers. I have gotten pretty good results using a grill stone and slow running water, kind of like wet sanding with a rock. It will flatten out the highs and Alwgrip pulls its surface nice and tight as it dries. I've seen some really great brush jobs. I have not seen it in bilges but I would think it would be resistant to what ever ends up in the motor hole.

Hey Randy, while I agree with the do this over the winter theory, if you need some help and spare pair of hands, let me know! If we get frustrated, we could always run over to St.Clair and splash my 22 for some air time! :D

All I can say is you guy's that pull your engines for the hell of it have guts! With my luck, something would brake that wasn't broke before and it would cost me a fortune to have it fixed.

Brad

PS. Kim was standing behind me waiting to see what was downloading (took a little while on dial-up) and once she saw the pictures she said "They aren't going to Kentucky?"

You guys have no faith. She'll be back together and running in a week or two. This, in my eyes is not a major project. I'm not going "into" the engine, I'm just replacing some maintenance items (seawater pump, riser gaskets, hoses, etc.) and putting her back together after some cleanup. Here's a few photos of the bilge as of last night.

Ranman, it looks 100% better already. I know painting the bilge makes it look great, but does it become a maintenance headache, or is it a "do it once, and forget it" sort of thing. Removing, and taping what's left in there seems like a lot of work, if it becomes a constant repair.

Where are the new subs going ... :D

Here's where I am after an afternoon with the boat. It's not running yet (obviously), butit won't be long. I spent about 6 hours on her today and things are starting to shape up. With some luck I will splash her next weekend.
