As I was flushing that nasty Florida salt yesterday, I wondered (I've only done this 10 thousand times) what would be best.
A) Shut down the engine with water still running, leaving water in the block.
B) Disconnect the hose, and let the engine blow out the water leaving it dry.
C) Do it matter?

Any thoughts.

Don’t run without the hose. The impeller will be damaged. I don’t think the block drains anyway.

Always shut down with the water running and do not drain the block. Cast iron likes to stay wet, if let to dry it corrodes very fast.
