You guys think this will be ok??? I am not sure if the Arneson will put too much stress on it. It is just a little rot....

Chris i was told by a friend that did a switch that the Arneson put less strain than a drives levering action. Hs said there was a bit more side thrust due to the length of the drive. This is second hand but seems to make sense. Now onto to your Potting Soil transom, being as the hull is gutted you can try digging it out till you get clean wood. Then try for a uniform slot so you can saturate with thinned West and drive in also saturated plywood strips, I would roll it up on its side so it soaks up good. I have done it, you just are going to see just how deep. Does it go downward also. If it starts to look bad, then do it right get a few long carbide tips for your router and plunge it from the out side, you can cut a nice shape and really do it right. Is it out here? I don't mind coming over to look at it.

Chris,
My recomendation would be to grind the transom down to about 1/8th of an inch thick from the inside of the boat (to keep the shape). Then laminate yourself a new transom! Be sure to extend the thick part out at least 6" on either side and gusset it to the stringers. While your in there try building solid motor mounts glassed to the stringers and bottom (use a big block of hardwood).

The big plus is that when you cut the new hole for the Arny drive it will be perfect! I would sugest making a routing template.

I have step by step pictures of the same work I did on Steve Marr's X-18 if you are interested.

Chris, you really should have a single layer of glass between each lamination of wood. But other than that you have a great looking transom slug there buddy! wink

Tom,

Been strong so far and we all know I never drive fast...

2 layers of Mat, 7 layers of Biax, 1 3/4 ply epoxied together, 7 layers biax.... A little overkill I think :)

You know me Chris... The King of over kill when to comes to glass work! Its interesting to me that production boats have such weak transoms, and the rot that happens in the cut out is so common. All that needs to be done is make the cut out a little bigger, seal the wood with resin and a layer of glass so as not to let water into the wood laminate!?!? Whats the big deal? But then again that's a hard way to make money on production boats.

You would be surprised at the things that you see when you take apart enough boats that the typical boat buyer will never see...
