How much HP and RPM's should a Volvo 280 be able to take?

Can the 280 be converted to a trimmable drive?

Is there any other difference between the 280 and 290 other than the trim?

Thanks.

Eugene,
the 280 will take upto about 500hp,and take whatever you throw at her, the 280 and 290 are very similar except the trim and I think the internals on the 290 might be alittle stronger
what gear ratio are they??? usually an a b c or d
my 250 b is 1 : 1.61
I would not think twice about the stregnth of a volvo.

how much hp can the 270 take? the prev owner told me they installed upgraded gears when they put the 345 hp zz4 engine in the boat. i don't doubt that he did, i just wondered what stock could handle.

Jim,
I've got nothing better to do! Not! If my clients knew how I spent a bettter part of my time. eek!

I am trying to figure out my costs and my options.
When I had my previous 18, I really wanted to put a big block in it.
I am hot on the trail of a 427bbc.
Aluminum heads, hi-perf cam, roller rockers,a nice set of headers, various other billet parts........ :D

Here I go again!

These are two that are good, All Island is in NY and has been very good. Ralph S found the other it also looks good.

Eugene, if you can find a transom assembly from a 280T ("T" for trim), you'll be in business. The trouble is, of course, is finding one. Otherwise, going to a 290 may be more of a practical move to get power trim since complete units come up on eBay from time to time. You will need the 1.61 gears though and a damn good prop though. Maybe if we are lucky The 'Grizz will have some good news soon on Solos props for the Aquamatic, otherwise its Hill Propellers (http://www.hillpropellers.com), and used Volvo Ultras props when you can find one. I did recently get an email from Ron Hill (not from Hill Propellers) stating the he can build a s/s high-performance Volvo prop like this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2410817988&category=26456) for about $300. One other thing, the weakest link in a Volvo Aquamatic is the vertical shaft which is designed to break cleanly before anything else in the drive breaks.

Forrest I've changed a bunch of those couplings over the years its simple, and the shear coupling a really good thing it has saved many a drive.
