DENTIST DUO CAPTURE CHECKERED FLAG IN CORPUS CHRISTI!

The Zero Cavity Offshore Racing Team throttled ahead to another checkered flag at the Allen Samuels Chevrolet East-West Powerboat Shoot-Out in Performance Four Outlaw Class, only 14 days after a disheartened roll-over at the finish while leading the Fort Myers race.

Dr. Santiago and Dr. Ochoa relied on Mark McManus of Fort Myers, Florida to completely rebuild the custom 24' Ocke Mannerfelt designed boat for the two week deadline. McManus implemented a change to the MerCruiser power train adding a duo-prop outdrive and trim tabs for additional stability at high speeds. Both doctors stated “the changes improved the overall performance of the boat.”

This is the 2nd win for the dentist duo. The Zero Cavity racing team also captured first place at this season’s opening race in St. Cloud, Florida. Dr. Santiago and Dr. Ochoa provided a “Ride of a Lifetime” for children on the Friday before the Texas race. Charity rides are arranged for under privileged children prior to every race that the team enters. Thousands of toothbrushes are also given out at every race to children that visit with the crew during the racing events.

Dr. Santiago earned the name “Hometown Hero” for providing rides in his race boat for the children of Make A Wish Foundation, Big Brothers-Big Sisters and the Sarasota Suncoast Foundation for the Handicapped. He has also taken time off to visit the American Cancer Society’s Winn Dixie Hope Lodge where he signed autographs for the children too sick to come to the races to meet him.

Dr. Santiago was recently awarded the Offshore Power Boat Racing Association’s (OPBRA) Pete Van Kirk Memorial Award for his undying dedication to the sport and charitable efforts, and the Rising Star Award, which inducted him into the 2000 Offshore Racing All Stars Team, an honor bestowed upon him by his peers.

The Zero Cavity racing team is now preparing for the next APBA offshore race, which is scheduled to be held in Sarasota, Florida from June 29th through July 1st.

Way to go Gentlemen. Your doing wonderful work with kids who surely are in need of some excitement in their lives. As anyone else tried the duel prop theory or are you the first. I'll bet a few more teams show up at Sarasota with the drives considering your success using it. Good Luck in future races and I hope to get up to the Cleveland race to meet you and GeneD.

Yes gentleman and ladies, victory can be sweet. But in this case, victory was bitter-sweet in that Jack Carmody, owner/driver of the Carlos and Charlie's Super Cat died of injuries suffered during Sunday's race.
It was a sad day for powerboat racing as a legend and a really nice guy was lost.
