Okay, it looks like we are shooting for the weekend of July 13-16 for a Donzi gathering here in the Les Cheneaux Islands. How does that work for you guys? The Hessel boat show has been mentioned as another date (August 11), but that wouldn't be a good idea due to the fact that all of the motels, bars, restaurants, and launching facilities will be over crowded.

At this point the lodging facilities still have vacancies for the second weekend in July, and I think I can get one of the local marina's to work with us on docking slips. I think or best bet is to make Hessel our base of operations, they have the best launching ramp and docking. Not to mention a great restaurant and bar within walking distance of the docks!

Please let me know if you might be interested in coming up to this event, and any ideas or suggestions you may have would be welcome. I'm getting excited to do this!

Count me in, for sure! Are you thinking of a hotel/motel, or a resort with cabins?

Tony, I think the hotel/motel will be our best bet. I'm waiting to hear back from a couple of resorts with cabins, but like I told you before they are pretty much booked up by the week at that time of year. Although neither is on the water, both the Les Cheneaux Motel and the Cedarville Comfort Inn offer nice facilities at reasonable rates. The way I'm looking at this is that we are going to be spending so much time out on the water that the only thing a room will be used for is sleeping and showering, so a room with a view isn't a necessity.

Sounds like a great time, I was up there a few years ago... your local knowledge would have been better then my chart I am sure!
Unfortunatley I will be at the Gold Cup in Detroit that weekend watching unlimted hydroplanes...
I will kepp watching your posts though to see how it all works out!

I thought I should give you guys an update on where we are for our July Les Cheneaux Blast, so here goes......

I'm working with the township here to get a block of slips in the Hessel Public Marina for our gathering. I think it would be fun to have a show and shine on Saturday morning, before hitting the channels. There are also grills and picnic tables in the marina, so we could grill out and save some food money for gas and beer!

Speaking of food, I'm sure both the Hessel Bay Inn and Angio's will work with us for any breakfast or dinner gatherings we may plan. The Islander Bar (West Entrance) will also host us either Friday or Saturday nights, or both if we so choose. Both the Islander and the Hessel Bay Inn are a stones throw from the Hessel launching ramp.

As far as lodging goes, I've only checked with the motels so far, I will follow up with the local resorts with cabins. Generally the resorts with cabins on the water fill up a year in advance, but I'll call around see if there are any vacancies, and post the phone numbers of the resorts with vacancies.

Cedarville Comfort Inn: 906-484-2266
Your basic Comfort Inn with pool, spa, etc.
$79 and up, depending on what type of room you choose. Plenty of trailer parking.

Islands Inn: 906-484-2293
recently remodeled, clean little motel. All rooms feature either 1 or 2 Queen beds, fridge, coffee maker, microwave, and cable TV.No phones in room. $49 or $55 a night. Plenty of trailer parking, and as an added treat host Rob Freel might just give you a peek at the triple cockpit Chris-Craft he is in the process of restoring.

Les Cheneaux Motel: 906-484-2581
Nice, clean motel, most rooms feature kitchenette's. Nice, quiet location (about 100 yards from my house!), and plenty of trailer parking. Call Bill or Kathy for room rates.

If any of you like the slots, we also have a small Sault Tribe Casino just north of Hessel. With regular shuttle service!

I don't think we want to get too stressed over a schedule, but I have had some ideas for activities. Friday evening we could do an evening cruise through the Islands, followed by a cocktail party and reception. Saturday, breakfast followed by a show and shine at the Marina. Hit the water for some Donzi fun, followed up by a picnic and swimming, tubing, etc. Get cleaned up and meet for dinner, drinks, dancing, etc. For those that choose to stay on Sunday we could possibly run over to Mackinac Island, weather permitting.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Also, if you are planning on coming I'd call and get a room as soon as possible. Please email me at rpmco@lighthouse.net so I can add your name, number, boat, etc. to my list. Thanks, Chris Riley
