This data is approx. 1 year old, and for service work on my 1991 King Cobra, which does include service on the outdrive and spitfire ignition: $50.00/hour. Current will probably be more like Harbormaster's $55.00/ hour.

On another note, He has all of the latest OMC diagnostic tools, equip., and will buy all the used Merc drives he an get his hands on! Not so with the Volvo or OMC King Cobra - interesting. Parts for the OMC drives still are easilly available, but rarely needed.

I use a large local dealership because I've known the owner for almost 40 yrs and I know his standards... an independent shop might be cheaper, but: $79 per hour.

PS. My Mercedes mechanic only charges me $50... but he has an independent shop... like above, I've known him for years (15).

Personally, I would not really be concerned with the hourly rate, as long as the particular shop
will offer a reasonable itemized estimate prior to doing the actual work. This and how well they
achieve their estimates.

In essense, know the person you are dealing with, How to acheive this will be subject to other discussion!

Purchase your parts after extensive web searching. You will realize savings up to 100 percent!

Get to know your mech / tech personally prior to the transaction, and outline exactly who and what is authorized to provide maintenance on your DONZI! "We dont' want a newbie changing our oil etc." (most of us do it ourselves)

Having this known beforehand, most will develop a longstanding relationship with a service facility, with both the proper tooling and diagnostic equipment - resulting in many happy DONZI hours to come.

Dont get me wrong here, the majority of maintenance can and should be done by ourselves if we feel ourselves confident. Harbormaster has graciously offered the bandwith and also how to articles to help us here.

Accordingly, I have never seen a better boating forum, including the incredible Boston Whaler, that is so comprehenshive as exist herewith.

:D I agree with Tailwind .....my shop is small and local with a small town mentality and they care about their customers coming back, I have received service work at no charge, I have purchased electrical components for substantially reduced amounts and I stay loyal to them as a result! Because I travel during the week, I would never boat if it was left to me to do anything other than keep that Puppy Clean :p , I just don't have the time or the know how, I would love to be like CDMA or Baxter, maybe someday...maybe an Arneson Conversion? Hmmmmmmmmm? Their rates are closer to $50/hour mark, but they don't round up....I guess the Thousands of $$$ I have given them starts to come back slowly! York , Pa  ...Doc

We are very lucky in the HRPA, we have a guy in our club that runs the business and provides a 24 hour man to the club, we never ask how much, just "can you get here now," and say "I need it fixed now" and how much do I owe ya $$$, thanks.... yes we pay more, but the wait is no more than one day.
In fact his latest idea is a loaner drive, on the spot!

I haven't needed him this season, but a few in the club has, certified merc guy, and makes butt loads of money in the evenings and weekends. We had a boat break in our poker run (Velocity electrical problem), they called him, he dropped all and showed up, easy repair, free of charge for a guest of the HRPA....

Shop norm to customer is 65 to 70 an hour in Va Beach.

Finger Lakes Area runs about 50/hr. When I need work done I trade the complex work (machine shop and lower unit work) for my time at my mechanics boat shop. I'm a great sander.

ational average is $52.50 bear in mind that there are stillmany $40/ hour dealers around. Also rember high performance work is higher depending on whom is doing the work. They usually charge by the job IE. Head work $xxxx.00 Dyno time is by the minute unless accompanied bu engine work then included by the shop. There are very few good people at less than $75 that are by the water. Also remember there is more to Hi-per than bolting on an exhaust and throwing some parts into an engine. Its the total combination. To me driability is as important to me. I want it to idle well AND go fast. This cost time/dollars
