I think the power steering pump on my 1976 280 TRS Mercruiser is tired. At high rpm I get a a noise that changes depending on steering system loading. It is hard to describe, it is like a grinding, rattling sound...
I looked at a merc pump and they are are $$$. I know it is a GM pump. Does anybody know if it is off a 1/2 ton, Camaro, Malibu etc... It would be nice to get a new one cheap at the auto parts store. I also think I will have to reuse my resovoir, the new square ones will probably not fit. And finally, how do you swap the pulley onto the new pump.
THANKS!!!!

The guts can be replaced as a cartrige assy. Had it done to mine after the heat exchanger ruptured and dammaged it. It is an automotive unit. Check your yellow pages.

I tried really hard to figure out if there could be any difference in the Marine vs. Auto steering pump. Water pump yes, steering pump no, so I went down to Discount auto and got one, I want to say it was under $40? and is working great.
