1.) 1968 HM 302/Volvo 250 outdrive. Did HM use standard Ford manual flywheel or something special I.E. lightened? aluminum?
2.)I need one, anyone got one laying around?

HO and standard use different flywheels, we had one of our guys order a new one right out of the book ignored one of those little asterisks and got a standard. Put the whole thing together, when he started it we thought it was going to jump out of the boat. I believe it is not a HM thing but a Ford thing matching the crank. When I called the rep not knowing just what had happened the first thing he asked was what was the firing order. We had an HO and put a standard on it.

Standard is 15426378 HO is 13726548

I am pretty sure that will help in your quest!

It has to do with the engine balance. The early engines use a different external balance on the flywheel and the harmonic balancer on the front of the crank. Other than that it is a standard Ford flywheel.

Bill I have to argue that point, when the flywheels are looked at from the engine side, they both have counter weight areas, there is alot more weight on one than the other. The wheel has to match the crank.

Thats right the early 302 engines are 28.2 oz in. unbalanced that is the pre 1981, and the 1981 and newer engines are 50 oz in. unbalance engines. These Ford engines are not internally balanced. You can not trade flywheels or front balancers.

The Ford part number for a pre 1981 302 flywheel is C3AZ-6375-J. The later 1981 and up is E2ZZ-6375-A.

Me even though running a Ford don't have a handle on alot of Ford stuff, I used to race Chevy's but am super stale on that stuff now. My engine was built on a 1986 GT40 block, the flywheel and harmonic balancer that was left over from the puked engine which was 1991 Ford 302 that came with the Donzi was the wrong weight. The flywheel we got from an OMC dealer but the balancer was like hens teeth due to the pulley bolt pattern. I found one that a dealer down in Texas had, cost me about $150 to get. He said the only one he had was the 50oz which was what we needed. I think this thing carries over alot of years and is a Ford not a HM issue. The old not used wheel had what looked to be a pound or two different offset weight.

We need a real FORD Guy to help out!

Thanks guys, you have been more help than HM!
They have nice patchs, stickers, expensive intakes and manifolds but little info. to share on their marine history.I do have a line on a 60's HM parts list, if I get it maybe Scot can add it to the archives.

I got a hunch when Big Griz reads this post he will get things in order. I do know that you have to make sure its the right wheel or it will shake like hell, and you will be pulling it back out to change it.

So far I have not mixed flywheels, but there is always a next time.
Those part numbers are from the Ford Power Parts book and should be correct.
