View Full Version : Creation of pattern on plug

Okay - forgive me if I don't get the terminology correct. But here goes...

Cliff and I are going to try and make some plugs and molds for the redoing of the 18' we have.

The cover for the center hatch has a diamond pattern on it. I am figuring that the pattern was created by pressing a metal screen onto the original plug.

Does that sound about right to any of you? Or do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

It was done most probably with a sheet (cuttings) of laminate. Eg; Formica/Wilsonart/Nevamar/Pionite etc. All these manufactures offer MANY MANY textures and patterns within any given colour line. Cross hatch, diamond plate, ripples, corrugations...It would have been cut to size, glued in placed, (on the plug) then waxed to death for the creation of the mold.

...just a guess...

Lenny,
Thanks for the suggestion. It seems like that's what they would have done. The only problem is, that we've looked at Home Depot, Lowes, and some cabinet makers, and they all look at us like we have 3 heads. We just can't find that pattern anywhere.
Does anyone else have and CONSTRUCTIVE ideas?

How about looking at a plastics distributor. See if they carry the large sheets of clear diffussion plastic used for florecent lights..... Its rather spendy though......

Cliff,

Hold on, now you're making me go out into a thunderstorm to uncover it but again, hold on......

All right, the storm was nothing compared to trying to get a decent photo of it with a cheap camera and you still can’t see the diamond style texture.

If you want, when you come on up here and you can take this as a template if you want. I will need to take some paint stripper to it to take off the top layer of paint to get the full texture of the mold that the original lid was (I would let you take the ski rack mold too but it may need some forming first once I take a good look at it). Like I said before, it does have about an 1/8th of an inch bow to it that will be straightened once I re-core it.

Let me know when you will be heading up to Norton so that I can have it ready for you when you stop by on the way.

Diana, call GIBCO Flex-mold at 817-236-5021. They have tooling applications for non-skid products with a pre-applied adhesive and "flexible sheets".

Bertram boy, why they "look" at you like that is beyond me 'cuz it comes from the States and is available everywhere. "We" even have tons of it.

Below is the product line once again.

Here are some distributors of it in Southern Florida close to Rolls Axle as they are one of the only "ZIP" codes I know right now...

Lenny,
I went to the links the 1st time you posted them, but couldn't find the correct diamond pattern. I think I may end up using something else or just making a flat panel. Thanks
