I am going to be putting an Alpha SS in an 18' classic with a stroker sbc. Will I still need to raise the x-dimension for the best performance? I don't want the prop to cavitate and I definitely don't want to re-do everything if its too high.

My understanding is that the SS is already 2 1/2 inches shorter. If you raise the x from there, you are probably pushing the limits.

You might be able to go another .5 inches but I would really stick to stock.

NOOOOOOO!
This is the beauty of the SS, no X dimension re-adjustment is necessary!
Leave it alone, you are fine!!!!!
Go baby go!

Yea, I agree. Though it may be OK to go a just little higher, I don't think that I would want my SS on my 16 any higher either. It works too well where it is!

I have tested 18's with a 2" raised X-dimension and gained 4 mph.
Also tested one 18 with a 3" raised X-
dimension and gained 5 1/2 mph. over stock.
In each case I was able to go up 1 prop size,
Gained 300 rpm on the 2" and 450 rpm on the
3" I also noted that time to plane was
virtually un-affected

Donzitester,
Was that an Alpha SS that was 2" and 3" above stock? Or what drive was it? It would sure save us a lot of headache to benefit from your testing.

MattM,
all of the testing is done with a specially
modified Bravo One drive that is cut 3"
up, then welded back together from mercury, (not available to the public for sale) then we use the latham spacers to
lower it accordingly, 1/2" thru 2" down.
Hope this helps you.
