This thing is BEAUTIFUL.!!! I have never seen one. Why is it that it looks like a Criterion? I thought F boats were all fish things?...

Currently I'm using a 25p Mirage and see 75+ on a regular basis but the high motor revs make me want to keep it lower. I've had it 80+ using a 29p (gauge olny goes to 80)but, unfortunately the Merc II trans (TRS drive) couldn't stand the strain. I replaced the original paper clutches with bronze, replaced all seals and it still won't hold up to the hp. I've recently gone back to paper clutches as they seem to hold better. I thought that it might have been a lack of pump pressure in the trans but both 750 and 4000 rpm spec pressures are at the high end of the scale. What I need is an BW setup because I'm itchin' to put the 29p back on and get a gps.

I have a Criterion with a supercharged 502. I twist it to 5,700 with a 27 inch prop. The engine was built to stand the rpms, with crank rods pistons etc. If I use the 28 brovo1 prop I can slip it easily with too much throttle. I was told by a engine /trans builder to twist the motor high with less prop to keep it alive. I have the BW trans in the basement waiting. One Ptoblem the BW is said to use the same clutches. The biggest real problem isthe input shaft is only 3/4 inch thick on the MercII trans that will snap if the clutches don't slip. It started to slip this weekend.
How long do your clutches last? BTW really nice looking boat. What kind of horse power does the engine putout?

BG,
My best guess on the hp is somewhere in the vicinity of 600. The trans clutches are the same dimensions in both the BW and MercII tbut the BW are bronze and the MercII are Raybestos or paper. When mine went last wear with the paper, the first slip was the beginning of the end as the paper tore up quickly under trans pressure and slip. After discovering Merc doesn't sell the clutch pack anymore I decided to use the BW bronze clutches. They slip more easily, but are more forgiving. Anyway, I got tierd of the slippage so I took the trans apart again and had a machinist cut down the rear pressure plate so I could put in another clutch disk and stator. Also, Raybestos still makes the paper clutches; I found them on the shelf at my local AAMCO shop. If you have any additional info. on the parts necessary (bell housing, tailstock etc.) to do the BW/Merc swap I would greatly appreciate it.
