We retrofited a 1986 Donzi Hornet with a 525HP supercharged engine. We would like to increase our fuel capacity accordingly. Even another 10 gallons would help. Does anyone have experience adding an auxiliary tank? It could be a separate tank with its own filler, fuel guage and valve to switch it over. I have read of a sailboat that added two Nauta, 9 gallon, flexible tanks that emptied into the main tank. Not sure how the gas guage would work and the thought of the flexible tanks banging around in the bow is concerns me.
A fall back position might be to just put a 2 1/2 gallon gas can bracketed in the engine compartment. I checked the Coast Guard and it appears legal but I wonder if it is a good idea. Any thoughts?

The first thing to worry about when installing new gas tanks is weight and center of gravity. A gallon of gas weighs 7lbs. A 2 1/2 gallon tank (18lb) wouldnt affect handling of the boat as much as a 70 lb tank somewhere else in the boat.
