View Full Version : Volvo differences?

When thinking about replacing my antique (but still going strong!) Volvo AQ200, I am wondering about the differences between the Volvo 270, 280, and 290. I know I will be looking for one with "T" for trim, but otherwise is there a preferred model amongst these three...and why?

All the 290 have power trim no T necessary. Its in the transum plate. The 270 never had a T series. only the 280 had a T type which is a direct bolt on, and hard to fine. the insides are pretty much interchangable. My 16 has the 200 that I put in a 270 vertical shaft in after my sister hit a telephone pole in the ocean off of Asbury park NJ. I put a 290 on my 18 Corsican. I forgot how long it really took. One weekend and it was done.

Go with the the 290. I am going to convert from a 280 to the 290 to be able to get trim.
I have been told there is an add/on trim for the 280 but the cost was ridiculous.
They did make a 270T but they were few and far between. My 16 came with that and a previous owner converted it back, the 270 and the 270T had a different transom plate. They had a lot of problems with the 270T and parts for the trim are hard to come by.
I am going to convert from the 280 to the 290 in my GT. I found a fellow who is going from the 290 to the Duoprop and I am going to get the whole transom assembly with the 290. I have been told the 270,280 and the 290 all have the same hole in the transom which means no fiberglass work or cutting.

The 290 has a slightly larger lower gearcase, and the gears and shafts are "burlier".The 290 was used primarily to drive larger/heavier boats. It's a tough drive. The 280 and 290 anticav plate are larger than the 270-and exhaust out the rear vs downward(that is if your exhaust goes thru the drive-not common on Donzi's).I run a 270 upper and middle case/290 leg.Toyally trouble free for over ten years now. :D

I did the 270 to 290 and took both apart to check for problems. both are exactally the same except for the prop shaft and verticle shaft coupler. the 290 is newer and has a ridg in the middle of the coupler the 270 has a small ridg which sometimewd slides down leaves no spline engagement. the hole in the transon is smaller for the 270 and the bolt holes don't line up. also the 290 has studs and the 270 has carrage bolts. I first ysed the 270 foot than changed to the 290 because it has a longer aspect ratio. It actually handles better. the speed is about the same but the 290 foot doesn't cavatate as easily. If I had it to do over again I would still do it.

Thanks, guys! As usual some great information on the pros and cons of these drives. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good deal on a 290, but the duoprop has always piqued my interest, too.
